What is Hypebeast Fashion?
A quick Googling online for the meaning of the word "Hypebeast" will yield the following results:
"A Hypebeast is a person who follows the trend to be cool or in style" - urbandictionary.com
"A Hypebeast is something of an insult, referring to a person who only buys shoes or clothes that are popular and cool" - WLRN.ORG
And those are the "mellow" one's
actually. I guess it suffices to say that there's a lot of negative views on
Hypebeast fashion.
But all opinions and preferences aside,
this writer thinks that fashion is a highly personal matter, so if being a
"Hypebeast" essentially means wearing the hottest and most popularbrands at any given time, who am I to stop them? We all want to look good and
feel good and if their inner selves are saying that wearing popular brand name
items bring them joy then I say so be it. To each his own, as they say.
Now before I go melodramatic over here,
let's cut out the noise and break down the "Hypebeast" fashion dogma
to get a clearer idea of what it's all about.
Hypebeast is definitely "street".
With its roots mainly coming from
sneakerhead culture, it's about showcasing the latest and hottest merch
in the street. Clearly, brand names and logos are at play here but as with
everything "fashion", looks and styles are the core philosophy.
Snapbacks,
caps, hats and more
There's a lot to choose from here: Stussy,
Undefeated, Thrasher, etc. Putting one of these bad boys complete the
street-style look of Hypebeast. It's basically a "choose-your-own-adventure"
game here, with designs ranging from plain and laidback to more
"in-your-face" statements. Choose one that fits your mood.
Shirts
Laidback yet bold, chill but hot. Hypebeast
fashion says you go with anything you want with your shirt. While one might
argue that the "Supreme" logo is probably the easiest design for T-shirt printing ever, it is one of the
most well-known and most ubiquitous brand in Hypebeast world.
Fit is not even an issue here. No, sir!
Depending on your overall get-up, you can go slim or you can go over-sized.
It's all about making a statement, baby.
Go for white, black, red, pink, purple or
whatever -- there are no rules. You can wear the whole rainbow if you want.
Popular brands include: BAPE, Billionaire Boys Club, Alexander McQueen and
Human Made.
Pants
and Trousers
In case you haven't noticed already, the
best thing about Hypebeast fashion is you can express yourself anyway you want.
You can wear your pants however you like it: Sleek and smart, loud and
stand-out. For maximum comfort, go for trackpants or cargo pants. Popular
brands include Nike, Heron Preston, Maison Kitsune, and MSGM.
Jackets
From vintage Puma track suits to fleeces,
bomber jackets to Denims. There's a whole range of styles to choose from. Brands
like Alyx, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Carhartt are popular Hypebeast jacket choices.
Sneakers
If you think that jacket selection is
plenty, then your choices for sneakers are endless. Just ask any sneakerhead
and you'll know what I mean. Sports apparel companies have blurred the line
between fashion and function years ago when the Hypebeast fashion trended which
saw popular artists and icons strut their stuff while in their trainers.
Jordan's, Nike, Vans, Alexander Wang, Stone Islands, Adidas, Reebok, Asics, are
some of the more widely-known sneaker brands.
Weather you like it or not, Hypebeast fashion is here to stay. Much like choosing a witty artwork design for T-shirt printing, I'd say as long as it makes you happy, go for it. Keep swaggin, kid.
